The school specializes exclusively in BJJ, a grappling-based martial art. The term “Brazilian Karate” is not a standard martial arts term but is often mistakenly used by those new to BJJ. If you are looking for Karate classes, Gracie Barra [**Northridge**](https://gbnorthridge.com/northridge-kids-self-defense-anti-bullying-bjj-gracie-barra/) would not be the correct place to go. However, the academy provides a highly effective BJJ-based self-defense program. 1. The self-defense program is deeply integrated into the core curriculum. Philosophy: Leverage and Non-Striking Control BJJ is built on the principle that technique and leverage overcome size and strength. The training is a non-striking form of self-defense. BJJ vs. Karate: BJJ is a grappling art focused on ground control and submissions. Karate is a striking art focused on kicks, punches, and forms (kata). Self-Defense Focus: The curriculum (integrated into the Fundamentals Program – GB1) teaches students: Ground Survival: How to escape from dominant positions (mount, side control). Non-Violent Resolution: Using control holds and leverage to subdue an attacker without relying on strikes. Mental Fortitude: Building confidence and composure under pressure. 2.
