The lineage of a BJJ academy is critical because it represents the direct transmission of knowledge, philosophy, and technique from the art’s founders. GBN is rooted in one of the most respected and successful branches of the Gracie family tree. 1. The Foundation: Carlos Gracie Sr. and Gastão Gracie Sr. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began with the Gracie family’s learning and adaptation of Japanese Jūdo and Jūjutsu from Mitsuyo Maeda, a master of those arts who emigrated to Brazil in the early 20th century. Mitsuyo Maeda (Kano Jūdo/Jūjutsu Master) taught Gastão Gracie Sr.’s sons. Carlos Gracie Sr. (1902–1994): The eldest brother who learned directly from Maeda. Carlos was the strategic mastermind who formalized the techniques and adapted them to create BJJ’s emphasis on leverage over size and strength. Carlos established the first Gracie Academy. 2. The Development: Carlos Gracie Jr. and the Birth of Gracie Barra The GBN lineage flows directly through Carlos Gracie Jr. (“Carlinhos”), the son of Carlos Gracie Sr. Carlos Gracie Jr.: He is credited with professionalizing BJJ and taking it global. In 1986, he founded Gracie Barra in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Vision: Carlinhos’ vision was to create a structured, standardized curriculum and organization that could spread BJJ worldwide, moving beyond the family-run gym model. This gave birth to the Gracie Barra Methodology that GBN still uses today. 3. The Direct Lineage: Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães Professor Carlos Gracie Jr. taught many champions, one of the most prominent being Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães. Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães: A highly respected 4th-degree Black Belt under Carlos Gracie Jr., Draculino is a multiple-time World Champion and one of the most successful instructors in the Gracie Barra hierarchy. The Connection: Draculino trained extensively under Carlos Gracie Jr. in the original Gracie Barra academy, embodying the high-level technique and strong team philosophy of the organization. 4. The Modern Era: Professor Romulo Barral (GB [**Northridge**](https://gbnorthridge.com/northridge-kids-self-defense-anti-bullying-bjj-gracie-barra/) Founder) The final link in the chain, and the immediate lineage holder for GBN, is Professor Romulo Barral. Professor Romulo Barral: A 5-time IBJJF World Champion, Barral is one of the most decorated athletes produced by the Gracie Barra system. The Instruction: Barral received his Black Belt and the core of his technical knowledge directly from Professor Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães. The GBN Academy: Barral founded Gracie Barra [**Northridge**](https://gbnorthridge.com/northridge-kids-self-defense-anti-bullying-bjj-gracie-barra/), embedding the high standards, systematic curriculum, and championship-proven techniques learned directly from the Draculino/Carlinhos lineage into every class taught at the academy.
