Anti-Bullying Program for Kids Northridge Gracie Barra

The Gracie Barra Northridge academy offers a highly regarded program specifically designed for children and teens called the Future Champions Program, which places a strong emphasis on anti-bullying strategies rooted in the principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

The program’s goal is to equip students with both the physical skills and, more importantly, the psychological tools necessary to handle conflict non-violently and confidently.

 🛡️ I. The Anti-Bullying Philosophy: Non-Violent Control

The Gracie Barra approach rejects violence, instead focusing on control, confidence, and de-escalation.

  1. Control, Not Striking

The BJJ Equalizer: BJJ is based on the principle of leverage over size and strength. Children are taught defensive techniques to handle a larger aggressor without resorting to punches or kicks.

Safety First: The focus is on control and neutralization. Students learn how to safely take a situation to the ground, use positional control to pin the bully, and maintain safety until an adult or teacher intervenes. This teaches children how to defend themselves without causing injury or escalating the conflict.

  1. The Three Pillars of Defense (Mindset)

The program teaches children a layered response to conflict, ensuring physical skills are the absolute last resort:

Awareness and Prevention: Teaching children to recognize potential threats, avoid dangerous situations, and seek help immediately.

Assertiveness and Communication: Building confident body language (eye contact, upright posture) and teaching children to use a strong, clear voice to set boundaries and demand that the bully stop. This confidence alone often acts as the strongest deterrent.

Physical Technique: Providing the skills to safely escape a grab, hug, or pin if verbal boundaries are violated.

👦 II. Program Structure and Character Development

The Future Champions Program is segmented by age to ensure the training is developmentally appropriate and focuses on character-building.

Program Segment  Ages  Primary Focus  Key Skills Learned

Little Champions  4–6  Basic motor skills, following instructions, and respect.  Fun, interactive games, simple movements (e.g., breakfalls), and safety rules.

Juniors  7–9  Discipline, focus, teamwork, and developing core BJJ techniques.  Detailed instruction, light cooperative sparring (rolling), and strong emphasis on the anti-bullying code.

Teens  10–15  Responsibility, leadership, and managing pressure.  Advanced BJJ techniques, strategic application, and preparing for the demands of the adult program.

 Core Values Reinforced

Every class is used to instill:

Discipline and Respect: Adherence to the rules, bowing when entering the mat, and respect for all instructors and peers.

Perseverance: The challenging nature of BJJ and the belt system teach children the value of hard work and delayed gratification.

Confidence: The most significant gain is the earned, internal confidence that comes from mastering a difficult skill.

📍 III. Academy Environment and Instruction

Elite Lineage: The program operates under the high technical standards of Professor Romulo Barral (BJJ Hall of Famer).

Specialized Staff: Instructors are certified black belts trained to mentor and teach children effectively, prioritizing a positive and safe learning environment.

The Culture: The academy fosters a supportive, ego-free, “family-like atmosphere” that encourages mutual support, vital for a child’s social and emotional development.

The Anti-Bullying Program at Gracie Barra Northridge ensures children gain effective physical self-defense skills, but, more importantly, they leave with the confidence and assertiveness to avoid and de-escalate confrontations before they become physical.
