Gracie Barra Northridge: Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class Explained

Deciding to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a powerful first step toward learning self-defense, getting in incredible shape, and joining a vibrant community. At Gracie Barra Northridge, we live by the philosophy of “Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone,” and that starts with making your very first class a safe, welcoming, and empowering experience.

It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. What will the class be like? Will I be able to keep up? What do I even wear? This detailed guide will walk you through every step of the process, so you know exactly what to expect when you walk through our doors.

Phase 1: Before You Arrive – Setting Yourself Up for Success

Your first class experience begins before you even leave the house. A little preparation will ensure everything goes smoothly.

Contact the School: The best first step is to call us or fill out the form on the Gracie Barra Northridge website to schedule your free introductory class. This lets our team know to expect you and ensures a coach is ready to welcome you.

What to Wear: For your trial class, you don’t need to own a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform). Wear comfortable athletic clothes that are free of zippers, buttons, or pockets, which can snag or scratch the mats and your training partners. Think workout shorts/leggings and a t-shirt or rash guard. We will provide you with a clean, loaner gi for your first session.

What to Bring:

Water Bottle: You will sweat, so staying hydrated is key.

Flip-Flops or Sandals: This is very important! You should never walk barefoot off the mats. Wear your flip-flops from the changing room to the edge of the mat to maintain hygiene.

A Positive Attitude: Come with an open mind, ready to learn and have fun. No one is expecting you to be a pro.

When to Arrive: Plan to arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled class time. This gives you plenty of time to check in, sign a waiver, get changed, and meet your instructor without feeling rushed.

Phase 2: Welcome to the Academy – Your First 15 Minutes

When you walk into Gracie Barra Northridge, you’ll be greeted by our staff. Here’s what happens next:

Check-In: We’ll have you sign a standard waiver and give you a brief tour of the facility, showing you the mat area, changing rooms, and restrooms.

Getting Your Gi: Our staff will provide you with a loaner gi that fits you. The gi consists of a heavy cotton jacket, drawstring pants, and a white belt, which signifies your status as a beginner.

Meeting Your Instructor: The coach for the class will come and introduce themselves. They’ll welcome you to the academy, ask about your goals, and answer any last-minute questions you might have. This is a key part of making you feel comfortable and integrated into the class from the very beginning.

Phase 3: Stepping on the Mat – The Structure of the Class

Gracie Barra classes follow a structured curriculum, which is perfect for beginners. You’ll never be thrown in without guidance.

Bowing In (The Formal Start): The class begins with students lining up by belt rank and bowing, first to the portrait of Master Carlos Gracie Sr. and then to the instructors. This is a tradition of respect for the art, the lineage, and your training partners.

The Warm-Up (10-15 minutes): The warm-up is designed to get your body ready for the specific movements of BJJ. It will include some familiar exercises like jogging and jumping jacks, but also BJJ-specific drills like:

Shrimping (Hip Escapes): A fundamental movement for creating space from the bottom position.

Forward/Backward Rolls: Learning how to roll safely over your shoulder.

Don’t worry if these movements feel awkward at first! Everyone starts here. The goal is to get your body moving and learn the basic mechanics.

The Technique Portion (30-40 minutes): This is the core of the class.

The instructor will demonstrate a technique or a series of related techniques, breaking it down into simple, step-by-step instructions.

You will be paired with a more experienced student or the instructor themselves. This is crucial for your safety and learning. Your partner’s job is to help you learn the move correctly, not to “win.”

You will drill the technique with your partner, taking turns performing the movements while the instructor walks around the mat, offering individual corrections and feedback.

Live Sparring / “Rolling” (What You Won’t Do): This is the biggest fear for many beginners. You will not be expected to participate in live, full-contact sparring in your first class. Safety is our top priority. Your introduction to sparring will be a gradual process, starting with “positional sparring” (practicing a specific technique against light resistance) in later classes once you have a solid foundation.

Bowing Out (The Formal End): The class ends just as it began, with students lining up and bowing to show respect and gratitude for the training session.

Phase 4: After the Class – What’s Next?

Once the class is over, you’ve done it!

Q&A with the Coach: The instructor will be available to answer any questions you have about the techniques or the class in general.

Membership Information: Our program director will sit down with you to explain our different programs (like the Fundamentals and Advanced classes), the schedule, and membership options in a no-pressure environment.

How You’ll Feel: You’ll likely feel a great sense of accomplishment, a little tired, and armed with new knowledge. You’ll have taken the most important step in your Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Conclusion:

Your first class at Gracie Barra Northridge is designed to be an introduction, not an ordeal. It’s a structured, safe, and welcoming experience that will give you a true taste of what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is all about: community, problem-solving, and self-improvement. The hardest part is walking through the door for the first time—we’ll take care of the rest.
